What is Impotence?
Impotence is the inability to achieve or maintain an adequate erection for sexual intercourse. Many men become sexually impotent but do not admit this to themselves. Once the problem is recognized and treated, most men can resume regular sexual activity. There are many causes for impotence and we attempt to determine what the causes are in each situation. Common causes are diabetes, hardening of the arteries, prior cancer surgery, hormone problems, and psychological disorders. Impotence can even be a side effect of some common medications.

How is Impotence Evaluated?
Your doctor will ask you questions about your medical history and will perform a physical examination. He may order blood tests, x-rays, sleep tests, or penile blood flow studies.

How is Impotence Treated?
Depending on your diagnosis, your treatment may vary from medical or surgical options. Medical therapies include changing current medications that you are taking, hormone replacement therapy, self-injection therapy, or vacuum devices. Surgical options include vascular surgery, penile implants, or reconstructive surgery.
